Who are we?

A cellar, a delicatessen, a restaurant, a lounge... All of these places are ideal for sharing our passion for wine with you...

Pushing open the door of Caves Legrand is like entering the history of Parisian gourmet food. For five generations, we have been sharing our passion with wine lovers. The "Legrand spirit" is a way of conceiving and practicing our profession in a constantly changing wine world.

A conception based on the knowledge of the field, the human relationship with our winemakers and our loyal customers. A respect for honest and sincere wine, representative of its region, respectful of the consumer and the environment. Legrand has always been careful to preserve this philosophy and ethics of wine.

Our teams are constantly on the lookout for unknown wines and the winemakers of tomorrow. They go to meet these exceptional men and women at the service of an art and whose wines have an extra soul. Where there are vines, there is man, there is life and stories that we like to transmit. A vector of culture, history and gastronomy, it is a world of pleasure that we make accessible to the greatest number of people so that these simple pleasures can be found at your table, shared with your friends. This is our spirit, this is our job.

The History

Since 1880 in Paris: LEGRAND FILLES ET FILS

The passion for wine.

At the end of the 19th century, spices were in fashion in Paris. In 1880, François Beaugé opened his store on rue de la Banque, in a former stall of the Corporation des Epiciers. People came to buy products imported from the East India Company: cinnamon, cardamom, curry, teas from Assam and coffee from the Malabar coast, as well as a selection of good bottles. The delicatessen enjoyed a good reputation when it was taken over by two brothers, Pierre and Alexandre Legrand. The success is confirmed.

The delicatessen enjoyed a good reputation when it was taken over by two brothers, Pierre and Alexandre Legrand. The success is confirmed. The family sold roasted coffee in the back room, spirits and various grocery products. The wines were bought in barrels from Bercy, which had a monopoly on wine at the time, and then bottled on the spot. They can be distinguished by their labels which mention "bottled by the master grocer".

The birth of the "cellarman" profession

Lucien, Pierre's eldest son, succeeded his father in 1945, with the same passion for wine. A visionary with a libertarian spirit, Lucien Legrand believed in terroirs and truly created the profession of wine merchant. He was the first to travel through the great vineyards in search of the "good little everyday wine". He highlights the wines he finds and the winegrowers he likes during tastings he organizes in the store. He discovered the Armand Rousseau and René & Vincent Dauvissat estates in Burgundy, the Trévallon estate in the Bouches-du-Rhône, and Jacques Selosse in Champagne. The discovery of young talents and their support are firmly anchored in Legrand's DNA.

A new perspective on wine

His glibness and charisma gather around him the whole of Paris. Journalists, artists, financiers, and simple wine lovers flocked to discover his little everyday wines and to ask his advice. Lucien Legrand initiated each of them by offering them a new look at wine marked by emotion and sensitivity. The success is there. The Caves Legrand became a showcase for the winemakers and an essential meeting place. Noiret, Serrault, Marielle have their habits there and Jean Carmet installs his cellar there. His daughter Francine continued her father's work from 1984.

A great taster, she became known for the elegance of her tastes and the precision of her choices, which led her to reveal new talents such as François Mitjaville at Tertre-Roteboeuf in Saint-Emilion or the late Laurent Vaillé at Grange des Pères in Languedoc from his very first vintage in 1992. Today, the Legrand spirit is still perpetuated: to bring to wine lovers the best of the selections with a permanent questioning. Our team is constantly scouring the vineyards to identify the wines and talents of tomorrow.
