Next year, Michel Reybier will celebrate 20 years since he bought Cos d'Estournel, and he is a very happy man, thanks to the terroir's "incredible ability to adapt" when confronted with a series of difficult weather conditions, as happened last year.
The combined experience and dedication of his team were crucial to their ability to respond to each new challenge. So, when it rained heavily, they thinned the leaves; the soils were hoed frequently. In the winery, their mastery of gravity flow and precise management of temperature-controlled vats to cool grapes picked during the summer heat made an enormous difference.
The results are surprising: "We were expecting a rather baked wine," remarks Commercial Director Charles Thomas, "but that isn't what we got. There's a freshness that's very surprising, given the vintage."
