At Carmes, the partnership between Patrice Pichet and Guillaume Pouthier continues to hold sway. Once again, this year, Pouthier pushed his daring choices still further, experimenting as a form of research under the trusting gaze of the estate's owner. He is seeking to create an outstanding wine, one that will express the majesty of this exceptional terroir: the Haut-Brion plateau.
After four hot summers in succession, the technical team were able to greet 2019 with the calm confidence of people who had become used to extremes of heat. By continuing to experiment each year, Pouthier has succeeded in taming the Carmes terroir, keeping its power in check and extracting as much sweet intensity as possible. He has walked a tightrope in order to protect the balance in his wines, making difficult choices without hesitation: all the extractions were accomplished gently, via infusion.
Just outside the winery, a flower garden has been planted, its perfume echoing the wine's bouquet. With its aromas of iris, peony and Earl Grey, "Carmes Haut Brion 2019 is a wine of exceptional style and inspiring charm."
