"If a man does not know to which port he sails, no wind is favourable". This is the quotation, from Seneca, with which Florence Cathiard welcomes her partners among the Bordeaux merchants when they gather for the presentation of the new vintage. Florence and Daniel Cathiard, determined and talented empire-builders, took advantage of this occasion to announce the purchase of Flora Spring, a Napa Valley estate founded in 1885. In this leafy prize surrounded by nearly 90ha of forest, they intend to adhere to the same principles of excellence already in play at Smith Haut-Lafitte. They also announced that they have taken a minority stake in Petit Village, alongside the Moulin family.
At Martillac, Fabien Teitgen, trusted confidant of 25 years' standing and today Director, is an advocate of the wine philosophy he calls "bio-precision". Biodynamic agriculture, precision selection within individual plots, experimentation with whole-bunch fermentation, sustainability, taking the winery vegan, the use of solar energy and even recycling water by creating reservoirs... thanks to these difficult choices, the estate demonstrates increasing respect for the environment and produces wines that are ever more precise.
Florence Cathiard talks about "a seductive 2019 vintage" and describes the "delight" that the teams experienced in creating the wine as well as the joy which, she promises, her future clients will have in drinking it.
