Just outside the medieval city walls, a tiny vineyard of 1.2ha, a Saint Emilion Grand Cru, is prospering. Catherine Papon-Nouvel, fourth generation of a winemaking family, has been working there without respite since 1998. An oenologist by training and an accomplished viticulturalist, she makes her wine without any preconceived ideas but with plenty of talent, prioritising innovation at all times.
The Clos Saint-Julien vineyard flourishes in ideal conditions, atop the prominent limestone rock that guarantees a constant reserve of water. It has been organic since 2008, as a result of Papon-Nouvel's firm convictions; she has also been trialling biodynamic procedures since 2016. Microbial activity is encouraged in the soils and grass grows between the rows of vines.
With its appetising flavours and exuberant perfume, Papon-Nouvel's wine is always pure pleasure, and 2019 is no exception. We can only recommend that you try it for yourself!
