The Nicolas family and their Estate Manager Marielle Cazaux all have their sights fixed on the same prize. Their joint project is to lift this estate, with its ideal location on the Pomerol plateau, to the peak of its possibilities, and each year that project gets a little closer to full realisation. Their mutual confidence is one reason for this success; another is Cazaux's detailed understanding of the terroir.
She admits that she has never had to work so hard to protect the grapes from the sun as she did in 2019. In obedience to the old adage that "one good hoeing is worth more than two lots of watering", the soils were turned over in order to preserve the moisture within.
The experiment with amphorae that began in 2018 continued this year, with 3% of the blend vinified in these receptacles.
The ideal blend for the vintage has never been so immediately obvious: the choice of plots in Conseillante 2019 has resulted in a wine that is radiant, sun-filled and yet quietly powerful. This is a very 'Pomerol' vintage, utterly seductive, perfumed with ripe fruits overlaid with notes of flowers and spice.
