"We are certainly at the luxury end of agriculture, but we want to keep our feet on the ground," warns Nicolas Glumineau. As the head of this estate, purchased by the Rouzaud family in 2007, he stays focussed on his mission: to breathe new life into these exceptional wines. In addition to building a new winery, he is restructuring the vineyards- a project, begun in 2007, that will not be completed until 2030. Accordingly, the estate's work progresses to the rhythm of vines pulled out and replanted... all of them cultivated in accordance with biodynamic principles. The faster this work progresses, the better he is able to understand the terroir that nurtures these vines.
In accordance with the detailed analyses that have been carried out, the aim is to achieve 70% Cabernet Sauvignon while reducing the Merlot plantings by almost half. At present, the latter make up 40% of the total, while the Cabernets comprise 50%. "For the last three years, the final blend has conformed exactly to the proportions we are planting. The terroir is confirming our predictions!" That 70% of Cabernet Sauvignon in the top wine is perfectly consistent: it acts as a veritable tidal wave of excellence. The late autumn was kind to the tannins, and they are long, well-defined and unusually elegant.
"We were astounded by the plenitude of the 2018; I had no idea that the new vintage would go even further. In fact, thanks to an incredible mid-palate, this wine is taut and precise yet without a hint of harshness," concludes Glumineau.
